Bio

Jan Boex (Halle, 1993) is a visual artist whose work is defined by a deep exploration of light, darkness, and the intricate relationship between emptiness and presence. Specializing in drawing, Jan refined his skills through the five-year fine art program at the Kunstacademie in Halle. His artistic style, marked by a sense of mystery, creates scenes of abandoned spaces, portraits, subtle skies, and landscapes that evoke a sense of the unknown.

Boex finds inspiration in the overlooked corners of both vibrant and deserted places. He is fascinated by man-made objects that once had purpose, but which, without human presence or experience, lose their function and become absurd within the larger context of the planet. Equally compelling to him is the idea that every creature, including humans, perceives the world differently through their senses. This provokes a deeper question: what is the world like without any spectators at all? The ever-present duality runs throughout his work, as does nature. These concepts connect to the philosophical idea of the noumenon.

Within this exploration, Boex also plays with the perspectives of men and women who perceive the world, seeking an answer amid the duality of emptiness and presence. Through all these elements, he reveals a subtle beauty.

"My creative process begins with capturing moments that resonate with me or imagining scenes I’ve envisioned or dreamt of. I then combine multiple images, refining them until they align with my vision. From there, I draw the composition, allowing it to evolve naturally throughout the process, without rigidly adhering to the initial concept."
