Bio
Jan Boex (Halle, 1993) is a visual artist whose work is defined by an exploration of light, darkness, and the intricate relationship between emptiness and presence. Specializing in drawing, Jan refined his skills through the fine art program at the Kunstacademie in Halle. His artistic style, marked by a sense of mystery, creates scenes of abandoned spaces, portraits, subtle skies, and landscapes.
Boex finds inspiration in the overlooked corners of both vibrant and deserted places. He is drawn to man-made objects that once had purpose but, without human presence, lose their function and become absurd within the broader context of the planet. Equally intriguing to him is how every being perceives the world differently through its senses — raising the question of what the world might be like without any spectators at all. This ongoing duality, closely tied to nature, connects to the philosophical idea of the noumenon.
Another important aspect for him is the emotional depth of men and women navigating this often dark world. The search for happiness in an age of technology that can feel empty, and the growing blindness toward the beauty of nature and the things we take for granted. He reflects on how objects created by humanity can sometimes overshadow nature, yet at the same time, give the earth another dimension of beauty. This tension between beauty and decay, light and darkness, lies at the heart of his work.
"My creative process begins with capturing moments that resonate with me or imagining scenes I’ve envisioned or dreamt of. I then combine multiple images, refining them until they align with my vision. From there, I draw the composition, allowing it to evolve naturally throughout the process, without rigidly adhering to the initial concept."
